Population serviced

Clients must meet the following criteria: 
  • Clients must be aged from two years to school leaving age at the time of referral (except clients referred to the 'Infant's On The Go' clinic) 
  • Clients must reside in the Sutherland Shire 
  • Clients must not be eligible for occupational therapy from the early intervention team or school therapy team at DADHC (Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care).

Therapists treat a wide range of clients including:  

  • Preschool children with developmental delays 
  • Children with learning and coordination problems 
  • Children who have suffered a head injury or cerebral vascular accident and have mild problems 
  • Children who have a specific syndrome or medical condition 
  • Children with mild physical and/or intellectual disabilities and who are attending regular schools 
  • Children with handwriting problems, organisational problems, gross or fine motor difficulty, self-care problems, and issues around attention and confidence.

Children with mild physical and/or mild intellectual disabilities, who are attending regular schools, are also seen at times where they have been unable to access another service.

 

Therapy model

A variety of treatment models are used depending on the age of the client, diagnosis type, severity of the problem and client needs.

Services offered include: 

  • Individual assessment and recommendations
  • Individual therapy block
  • Group programmes (including handwriting groups, kindergarten group, preschooler's groups, ready for school group)
  • Home programmes
  • School or preschool based programmes
  • Consultation with school, preschools and other agencies about the client
  • Group education session to new parents at the local early childhood centres
  • A monthly consultative service for children under three years of age at the early childhood centres (called 'Infant's On The Go')
  • Inservices/education sessions for teachers, preschools and parents
  • Handwriting outreach programme within specific schools
