Population serviced

Children who are aged 0–16 years who live in the Sutherland Shire, although limited services are offered to older school-aged children.  


Children must have articulation; language; fluency; voice; and/or oral-motor disorder. They must be within the average-borderline range of cognitive functioning. Children within the upper IM (moderate intellectual disability) range will be seen if psychometric results suggest a specific language disorder or an articulation, voice or fluency disorder is present.

 

Therapy model

A variety of treatment models are used depending on the age of the client, severity of the problem and diagnosis type. Children require an assessment before individual or
group treatment if offered:
  • Individual assessment of children followed by home, school or preschool programs and review appointments 
  • Group therapy programs. Groups programs offered include: Early Language Group for parents of language-delayed children aged 18mths - 3yrs; 3 year old language group; preschool group; Ready For School Group; Year 1 language group; Year 2 language group; Year 3 language group; phonological awareness group
  • Individual therapy (generally eight sessions per block of therapy, with a limited number of therapy blocks offered)
  • Consultation/collaboration to schools, including a part-time service based at the Sutherland Learning Support Centre
  • Language stimulation and development talks at local childhood centres for families with children under 12 month 
  • Parent training programs 
  • Education/consultation services for pre-schools, day-care services, other health services and community groups on issues related to speech pathology
