Population serviced
|
Children must live in the area
covered by the St George Community Health Centres. They must be included on
a current medicare card. Any child, who meets the following criteria will be
offered a screening assessment:
- Borderline to average and above range of cognitive function as
determined by psychometric assessment (IQ)
- IQ in the borderline - mild range will be seen if psychometric
assessment indicates a particular (significant) problem with aspects of
occupational performance eg gross motor, fine motor, self care skills
- Mild developmental and or physical disability, and not receiving
services elsewhere
- Presenting behaviour is not the major determining problem in ongoing development.
However only those children who meet the service criteria and have
developmental goals that can be set and achieved by evidence based practice,
are offered sessional therapy.
Exclusions: Children over the age of 12 are offered assessment only. Children
who have an IQ of less than mild range should be referred on to
Department of Ageing and Disability and Home Care. Children with a specific
physical disability such as paraplegia, quadriplegia, cerebral palsy, visual
impairment, hearing Impairment will be referred to a more appropriate
service. Children with behavioural disorders that directly undermine the
provision of therapy (above and beyond normal behavioural concerns) will be referred
to the appropriate agencies such as Child Youth and Family Service and
Autistic Association.
Priorities are determined by the occupational therapists depending on the
current waiting list. Generally the priorities are: 1) Children with a
medical referral from illness, accident or injury that they have impaired
function. 2) Children below two years of age who are not being seen
elsewhere and have a mild delay. 3) Children who require an assessment
for school placement/or equipment. No therapy is offered for these specific
requests. 4) Clients who are on review.

Therapy model
|
|
Occupational therapy focuses on development through play. This includes
gross motor (such as running, hopping and jumping), fine motor (such as
drawing,
colouring, writing and block building), activities of daily living eg
dressing) and general cognitive development ie puzzles, games, colours,
letter recognition etc. Some referrals are specific eg visual
perception, handwriting, co-ordination, hand/eye skills, developmental
delay, premature baby and other specific medical problems. |
