Medium Term Inpatient Service Project

Following approval by the Centre for Mental Health for the capital funding for the Non-Acute Unit (NAU), planning for the redevelopment of the Prince of Wales Hospital’s Euroa building to house the service has continued rapidly with positive results. This service is a new resource for South East Health.

Part of the unit will undergo significant redevelopment to house the Prince of Wales Older Persons Psychiatry Service and redevelopment to create a more open area and increase the outdoor space available in this section.

The redesign of the building has occurred in consultation with a number of user groups where staff of the unit have provided input into identifying the best use of the space available.

The NAU will be housed in the area currently used by the Older Persons Psychiatry Service. Some of the expert advise regarding the design of the unit will be provided by representatives from current inpatient rehabilitation or non-acute services outside of South East Health as well as staff from across South East Health with interest and expertise in the area of rehabilitation.

High Supported Accommodation Project

This project is progressing in partnership with the Non Government Organisation (NGO) service provider, NEAMI.

NEAMI is a Melbourne based NGO with extensive experience in providing psychosocial rehabilitation, education, support and advocacy for people living with a psychiatric disability.

Consumer involvement and participation is an integral part of NEAMI values. Consumers have input into all levels of the organisation and are involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the services provided.

NEAMI provides a range of psycho-social rehabilitation services for people with a psychiatric disability which include day programs, home based outreach support, supported housing and an art based program. NEAMI is also committed to promoting mental health and to continued service development and quality improvement.

The role of NEAMI in South East Health will of course be focussed on the supported housing aspect of service provision however, the wealth of experience that exists within this organisation will strongly enhance the supported accommodation project in South East Health.
